STRIVE: Safe Trajectory Realization of Intelligent Vehicles

Short Description of the Research Project:

Cars are becoming more automated, but safety incidents still happen when a human driver - or an onboard automation - makes a mistake. The STRIVE project will develop a low-cost safety "guardian" that can be added on top of existing vehicle controllers and intervenes only as a last resort to prevent unsafe manoeuvres (for example leaving the lane, losing tire grip, or failing to avoid an obstacle). The developed controllers will be tested both in a laboratory test rig and in full vehicle tests at the University of Michigan, aiming to improve safety without replacing validated legacy control systems.
