HUN-REN Wigner Research Centre for Physics

Partner introduction:

HUN-REN Wigner Research Centre for Physics (HUN-REN) is an independent legal entity in the organizational framework of the Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN). It is one of the research excellence flagship organisation recognised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and a key participant both in the national innovation system and European research cooperation. The Central Research Institute for Physics (KFKI), founded in 1950, was the predecessor of the research centre. The Wigner RCP was founded in January 2012 merging the previous KFKI Research Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics and the Institute for Solid State Physics and Optics. Today it is the largest research institute for scientists in physics at Hungary. It is the leading centre of its kind in Eastern Central Europe hosting ~35 research groups located at a campus with 400 employees in academic research and high-tech spin-off companies.

HUN-REN Wigner RCP is supporting a wide range of public outreach activities, including teacher and student training programs, which helps to keep excellent students to join the different R&D projects very early. HUN-REN Wigner RCP is not a PhD granting institution (according to national legislation only universities are entitled to grant PhD degree at Hungary), hence in this issue the Centre rely on the long-time established interinstitutional agreements between the Research Centre and Hungarian universities (most notably, with the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) and the Lorand Eotvos University of Budapest (ELTE)).

HUN-REN Wigner RCP has great practice in handling larger scale grants - both the staff and the management is equipped with the necessary experience and infrastructure for handling such grants since FP5. The performance of HUN-REN Wigner RCP in FP7/H2020/Horizon Europe and national excellence based large scale grants is also outstanding. HUN-REN Wigner RCP has participated in FP7/H2020/Horizon Europe with high success being involved in more than 50 FP7/H2020/Horizon Europe grants, as well as in a number of other domestic and international projects. Some relevant EU project funding schemes in which HUN-REN Wigner RCP has been involved: research and innovation actions (RIA), research and training actions (MCSA schemes), research infrastructures, European Research Council schemes (ERC), etc.
