Moiré superlattice engineering of the topological flat band in rhombohedral graphite

Short Description of the Research Project:

Graphite, despite being very common, is a material that still puzzles physicists. It is made of extremely thin sheets of carbon atoms, graphene, which are stacked together like cards. The graphene "cards" can also be misaligned or rotated.
Combinations of different graphene "decks" can sometimes lead to strange electronic properties, which are still not understood.

This project focuses on finding the best ways to design graphite with atomic precision, in order to develop future quantum devices.
